The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom’s hospital bills. My baby brother’s tuition. My tuition. Rent. Electricity. All of it on my shoulders. And I had just lost my job. There was no hope, no money in my account, no work to be found. And then, just when I thought all hope was lost, I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of ten thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just “VRI Inc.,” and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing…except a single word, on the notes line: “You.” Just those three letters.
If you receive a mysterious check, for enough money to erase all your worries, would you cash it?
I did.
The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: “belong.”
A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. “To me.”
The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom’s hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you’re desperate? You don’t. I didn’t.
And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: “It’s time to pay your debt.”
Would you have gotten in?
I did.
It turns out $120,000 doesn’t come free.
Christine’s 4 STAR Review!
The moment that this book cover and synopsis were revealed I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Alpha! I have read Jasinda’s EVER Series, which I completely loved, and knowing how different this one would be, I was excited to see Jasinda’s ability to write about something so unique and different showing us her range as an author.
I thoroughly enjoyed Alpha. Sometimes you need something completely different from what you normally read (for me different is erotic and totally filled with lots of hot sex!) – something out of your comfort zone to take you away from the seriousness and Alpha was just that for me.
The premise of this book completely hooked me and was so captivating and new. Kyrie, struggling to make ends meet, loses her job and is at a loss for how she will support herself until she receives a mysterious check for $10k in the mail with no additional information provided as to whom the check came from. Kyrie cashes the check to pay off her debts and over the following months continues to receive and cash checks from her benefactor knowing that this gift isn’t free and eventually she will owe someone for this gift bestowed on her. Kyrie has a tough life as she is young and with so much responsibility on her shoulders so accepting the money helps her get through some of her financial burdens.
When a man comes to “retrieve” her to meet this mysteriously rich benefactor, the reader is taken on a sexy, hot and erotic journey to a world that Kyrie has never known. Lavished in beautiful clothes and spoiled in riches, it is every woman’s dream. And no, I won’t tell you who Mr. Mystery Man is as I truly don’t want to spoil the suspense that was built up within me while trying to figure out who this was and the what and why’s he wanted Kyrie for himself. I will say that I would have done what she did and continued on with the agreement to get to know this man, his secrets and who he is beyond the blindfold he insists Kyrie wears until she gets to know him better.
So while I completely swooned and fell a little in love with Mr. Mystery Man myself, there were some things that didn’t work for me while I sat and thought about the book days later. For me, when I read and review a book, it usually takes a couple of days to process all of what I felt, my emotions and what I thought about a book. And this methodology wasn’t any different for Alpha. When I finished reading, my first impression was that this was a 5 star book for me. I was so deeply engaged and captivated and loved the hot sex scenes and was so engrossed in this couple and their story. However as I sat a few days later to write my review and looked over my notes, I realized that there were some things missing in this story for me. And that because this was a different read for me, I was clouded over in the tangible physical aspect between this couple that I missed what I truly love in books that I read – I missed the story, the emotions that I know that Ms. Wilder writes so well that evoke such feelings in me that I can’t even explain. Coupled with that, I wished for more development of the characters; not in the physical sense as that was 1000% there but the connection – I just wanted more. For me, while I enjoyed Alpha immensely, I wanted to savor it more and not have it feel quite so rushed. I liked the anxious feelings I felt wanting to know the secrets and almost wanted there to be less of the hot sex. I just wanted more…and I’m hoping that Ms. Wilder will give us more about their next phase in their relationship, where they go from here as I think that will make it more of a complete story for me.
So yes, I did enjoy Alpha and would recommend it to the reader looking for their next hot read complete with alpha dominant male. Alpha is well written and intense and fans of Ms. Wilder will not be disappointed. This is her hottest book to date in my opinion.
