No one was prepared for the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. Originally written in 2010 as a piece of Twilight fan fiction and posted online, it eventually sold over 100 million copies, taking erotica mainstream. But women didn't only read erotica in large numbers; they also wrote it. In the aftermath of Fifty Shades a cottage industry emerged around self-published romance novels. Once women who worked forty-hour-a-week jobs, living paycheck-to-paycheck, many of them are now New York Times bestselling authors with their own merchandise lines and die-hard fans. Naughty Books follows three such women: an Air Force vet, a telemarketer, and a hospital administrator who became millionaires in under a year by using pen names to sell erotica online. They garnered thousands of fans and secured lucrative book deals with major publishing houses by writing about good girls and bad boys finding love and having steamy sex. However, as more and more people saw writing erotic romance as a quick path to money and fame, the market became saturated with hundreds of romance novels published every month, making success difficult to maintain…
Naughty Books documentary was a powerful look at gender dynamics …. and if you think this is me commenting on the book it refers to, you are mistaken…. this film features authors who are brutally honest about how an increase in income affected their lives.
This film explores the romance genre post Fifty Shades of Grey in that is now an Amazon self-publishing world…..
Authors, agents, professors, and book store owners speak about how self-publishing changes and contininung to change the face of romance. There is also dialogue around the power dynamic between big publshing houses and authors as authors have direct access to readers allowing the marketplace to determine the next big thing….
More importantly, this film looks at gender eqaulity and what happens when you try turning what you love doing into a business.
Laurelin Paige’s husand’s honesty was raw and may have many viewers really thinking about the role money plays in their relationships. His transparency about dealing with depression around their new relationship with money was throught provoking.
Kristen Proby’s heartfelt piece about her success enabling her to get out of her prior relationship may bring a tear to your eye.
I enjoyed this film as I said it was a look at how money effects with relationships, it was also a good look at small business ownership…. as authors experience success translation that, contining to write and build a business is a challenge.
Some of the authors succeeds and some admit….. well… I don’t want to run the end watch this one…
As it is about more than just reading “dirty” books or women’s appetitie for naughty books, it really is a commentary of women’s evolving status in society.
