From the acclaimed author of Forever, Interrupted and After I Do comes a breathtaking new novel about a young woman whose fate hinges on the choice she makes after bumping into an old flame; in alternating chapters, we see two possible scenarios unfold—with stunningly different results.
At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.
Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?
In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Liferaises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?
Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.
I simply love this author and her previous books and couldn’t wait to read Maybe in Another Life.
What a unique, different and fun reading experience. Taylor Jenkins Reid has the ability to captivate the reader from page one and has become a MUST READ author on my list.
I am a firm believer in fate and soul mates and this book was so much fun to read because the reader is able to witness Hannah Martin’s life as the book shows us how our choices affect our path in life and how our decisions could change everything.
I don’t want to reveal what happens in this book as I think that experiencing the two alternating scenarios and the “what could happen” was exceptional. But I want to say this…Taylor Jenkins Reid has time and time again made us readers open our eyes to a different perspective. She has the ability to make us think outside of the box so that when we are done reading, we reflect on the messages that she has incorporated into her books.
But even more than this is how the author showed us that despite our decisions, no matter what path in life we take, there is happiness to be found. Knowing that and experiencing Hannah’s growth throughout the book gives the reader hope that what is meant to be will happen, that who we have in our lives is our soul mate and who we are destined to be with, and that everything happens for a reason….
Life is long and full of an infinite number of decisions. I have to think that the small ones don’t matter, that I’ll end up where I need to end up no matter what I do… My fate will find me.
Emotional, thought provoking and unique, Maybe in Another Life is a must read for everyone, who like me. wonders about the what-ifs.
