Shh Moms… Remembering September 11th 🇺🇸

Posted on 11 September, 2019 by in Shh Moms Talking / 1 comment

Today we remember those lost on September 11th.

As we reflect on this day, I wanted to share some wonderful stories of courage and remembrance.

I have used many of these resources with my own children.

🇺🇸 The Man in the Red Bandana is the powerful story of Welles Crowther who on September 11th perished saving others:

The Man in the Red Bandana Children’s book written by Wells’ sister
The Man in the Red Bandana Adult Book

The Man in the Red Bandana Documentary: Amazon
The Man in the Red Bandana Documentary  iTunes

Short Video about Welles, The Man in the Red Bandana.

🇺🇸 A powerful YouTube recount of the BOATLIFT, An Untold Tale of 9/11 Resilience:

🇺🇸 Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey is a children’s book about a boat that came to the rescue on September 11th

🇺🇸 Seven and a Half Tons of Steel tells the story of a Navy Ship called the USS New York built from steel that was once inside one of the World Trade Towers.

🇺🇸 The Scholastic’ I Survived Series is a fabulous one.. and I Survived the Attacks of September 11th, 2001 is no exception. Books in this series focus on a tragic day in history but central to the story is a child who survives. We highly recommend this whole series!

🇺🇸 A wonderful fiction book for middle schoolers Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story. This novel follows 4 characters from various walks of life through their day on 9/10/01. It is a story of hope more than anything  and it provides some perspective into the “before” and “after”.  My son enjoyed this book so much that pictured about is his signed copy.

Thank you for taking time to share your September 11th with us and we hope you find these resources helpful.  ❤️

I also think that for children it is important to remember they don’t “feel” September 11th like we do.
For them it is like us learning about Pearl Harbor… it was tangible for my grandma but learning it in school for me was very different than her living it.

Please feel free to share with us September 11th themed books that have touched you.

This is a note from a 5th grade educator that we thought beautiful enough to share as it provided some true prospective on young minds:

I have found in the past that our children, having not been born when this horrific event took place, are very far removed from it.  While WE, as adults who remember it so clearly, usually have a very emotional reaction to this anniversary and this event, our kids only know this as another event in history, much like the bombing of Pearl Harbor, assassinations or Presidents, and other topics discussed in history/social studies class.
