In an unforgettable love story, a woman’s impossible journey through the ages could change everything . . .
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time.
The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar. Mistaken for the boy’s long-missing mother, Anne adopts her identity, convinced the woman’s disappearance is connected to her own.
As tensions rise, Thomas joins the struggle for Ireland’s independence and Anne is drawn into the conflict beside him. Caught between history and her heart, she must decide whether she’s willing to let go of the life she knew for a love she never thought she’d find. But in the end, is the choice actually hers to make?

I love historical romance and I absolutely LOVE time travel (and Outlander!!) so when I saw this book and the synopsis, I had to read it. Amy Harmon has never disappointed and she outdid herself with What the Wind Knows.

When Anne Gallagher’s beloved grandfather Eoin passes away, she must return to Ireland to spread his ashes in the loch by his home. As she throws his ashes to the wind, she is consumed by the fog and transported to the Ireland of 1921, a very dangerous, war-ridden place. Mistaken for Eoin’s long-lost mother, she assumes this role to remain in her grandfather’s life while learning more about her family of the past. And meeting the love of her life while standing up for the independence of Ireland’s people, the reader will journey with Anne as she faces danger and peril of the history she has only read in history books.

To be quite honest, I never knew of the war and political conflict in Ireland in 1921. Amy has outdone herself in her research as the journey in this time really put me in the middle of it all… feeling unsure of the future of characters I was completely vested in while learning something new of our world’s history. I loved the relationship between Eoin and his granddaughter and even more so, seeing their relationship when she is living in the past. I was completely captivated… reading this book in one sitting well into the night, finally falling asleep at 3am. I HAD to know what was going to happen and how it would come full circle.

This was a beautiful journey of love and loss, of learning about one’s family and self while finding a love of a lifetime. I absolutely adored Thomas… what a great man! Staying true to himself, his friends and loved ones, Eoin, all the while falling in love with this different Anne… someone who he knows so well yet seems so different. I loved his journal entries and getting insight into his thoughts about the war and Anne… always Anne. <3 This was a slow burn romance that tugged at my heartstrings with the turn of each page… I was consumed by them.

So while I loved this book wholeheartedly, and I know the amount of time and research that went into this book must have been intense and in-depth, it was almost TOO much information for me. While I was interested to learn more about history, I wanted to know more about our characters… I wanted to watch their love and be wholly immersed in that and felt that sometimes the amount of information that was put into the book took away from that love and romance. I admittedly skimmed at times which I HATE doing (most especially for an Amy Harmon book because I just love her so) but I wanted to get to Thomas and Anne and Eoin and felt that the secondary stuff took more of a front seat to what I wanted to read. Hopefully this makes sense because I am not knocking this story at all… I LOVED it… COMPLETELY… it just felt like a lot at times.

Amy has a way with words… her storytelling unparalleled. I will read everything and anything she writes, she is just so talented. This is still a top-notch book but it just wasn’t my favorite Amy Harmon book. I believe in soul mates, I believe that love can transcend time… and Harmon has given us a love that will embed itself into our hearts and be remembered forever. I love her poetry, I love her words, and Amy has a forever fan in me.
